What’s the difference between first and third party cookies?

First party cookies are cookies that are set by the website that you are visiting and it's only this website that can access and read these cookies.  

Third party cookies are set by someone other than the owner of the website you’re visiting. As an example, some pages have content from other sites like YouTube. YouTube may set their own cookies on your browser when you play the video from YouTube. Cookies set by other sites and companies (ie. third parties) can be used to track you on other websites that use the same third-party service.

Types of cookies and how we use them
Session Cookies

We use Cookies to allow the Refapp web site to uniquely identify a user’s browsing session on the Refapp web site and to allow us to coordinate this information with data from our Refapp web site server.

We use Google’s “analytics” Cookies which, in conjunction with our web server’s log files, allow us to identify unique, but anonymous users. These Cookies can also calculate the aggregate number of people visiting our Refapp web site, the date and time of a user’s visit to the Refapp web site, the pages a user has viewed and the time spent by users at the Refapp web site. Purpose: This Cookie is placed by Google. It enables Talentwise to learn information about our users use of the Refapp web site such as the time of visit, the pages viewed, whether the user has visited before and the web site visited prior to visiting the Refapp web site.

In particular it enables Talentwise to see how our users move between devices when accessing the Refapp web site and Facebook, to ensure that Refapp’s Facebook advertising is seen by our users most likely to be interested in such advertising by analysing which content a user has viewed and interacted with on the Refapp web site.
